Cobden, Ontario. Not exactly renowned for producing high-caliber hockey players now is it? That is unless your name is Jack Quinn. Born and raised in Cobden with a population of approximately 2000 people, Quinn is now on the cusp of the NHL. So what is it about Quinn that has so many NHL scouts salivating? It is his raw talent? Offensive awareness? Ability to make elite plays? Or all of the above? Let’s dive in and examine Jack Quinn, as a player to keep your eye on at the upcoming 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Jack Quinn

Position: Right-Wing

Team: Ottawa 67’s, Ontario Hockey League, (OHL)

2020 Draft Prospect Ranking (Central Scouting): 7th Amongst North American Skaters

Batman & Robin vs. Quinn & Rossi

Success stories typically involve partnerships. Batman had Robin. Michael Jordan had Scottie Pippen, and Quinn had Marco Rossi. As a member of the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Jack Quinn put up a monster season in 2019/20. In just 62 games played this year, Quinn notched 52 goals and 37 assists for 89 points. His teammate, Marco Rossi (and the Batman to Quinn’s Robin) scored a league-high 120 points. The two of them were simply spectacular and certainly took “The O” by storm. Junior hockey fans from far and wide would fill the TD Place Arena in Ottawa to catch a glimpse of the dynamic duo in action.

It’s a shame the OHL season was brought to an abrupt (and premature) end due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the case of Quinn, he was certainly on pace to eclipse the 100-point plateau leading up to the 2020 Draft. His Ottawa 67’s also sat atop the OHL standings as one of the most electrifying teams in the Candian Hockey League. Oh, what could have been.

Jack be Nimble, Jack be Quick. Jack’s Pretty Good with a Hockey Stick

There’s a lot to like about Jack Quinn as a player. For starters, each shift has the potential to be all-encompassing and dominant. Over the last 14 months, Quinn began training hard to improve all facets of his game. His hard work and dedication paid off as he went from tallying 32 points in 2018-19 to 89 this past season. With elite-level skill in abundance, Quinn also excels at many of the game’s intangibles. He possesses superb stickhandling skills with the ability to evade checks. Quinn also has a powerful release and loves to score goals. All players love scoring, but Quinn has a real passion for success, winning, and the hunger to improve.

Scouts have marveled at his competitiveness and his ability to “dig” for loose pucks. Quinn’s overall game also continues to evolve. He can check, play both sides of the puck, and his on-ice positioning is also well above average for a young player. That’s going to be an important part of his game given his size (5’11, 176 pounds) as he closes in on the National Hockey League. Quinn also takes real pride in his skating ability and his strength on the puck. Both have come a long way and have been brought to the forefront this season with the 67’s.

NHL Ready?

Slated to go between the 15th and 20th overall picks, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Quinn crack the top-12 at the NHL Draft. Any team starving for offensive (and there are a few across the NHL) will certainly have a keen eye on Quinn. This is an immensely talented winger screaming with 25-goal potential at the NHL level. It may take a season or two, but Quinn has all the makings of a real solid player. Another season spent refining his game and “filing out” as a player would work wonder for the Cobden native. The only question is, which team will be blessed with his services?
