It was an exciting Day Two of the draft, as some players went higher than expected and others went lower. Still, some teams have already had better drafts than others and it’s becoming quite apparent who is winning and who is losing. With that said, these are the winners and losers from Day Two in the 2020 draft.
Winners
Arizona Cardinals
The second-round pick went for a top-three receiver in the league in DeAndre Hopkins and then the third-round pick got a first-round talent tackle in Josh Jones. Cardinals continue to take the value in the draft and acquire great picks. You can check out the Jones predraft scouting report here.
Detroit Lions
Adding a plug and play guard in Jonah Jackson and a high upside edge defender in Julian Okwara both in the third round was fantastic. However, I’ll be the first to say that drafting D’Andre Swift in the second round when there was a variety of needs wasn’t the best of choices. Swift seemed to always have a nagging injury, and he’ll replace an injury-prone running back in Kerryon Johnson; if Swift can stay healthy and the other two are productive, this draft class was a win.
Jerry Jones & the Cowboys
Letting Trevon Diggs and Neville Gallimore fall to the team without a trade-up was impressive. Many people were skeptical about Jones not having any scouts in the room with him, but so far he’s gotten some of the best value in the draft.
Drew Lock, Quarterback, Broncos
The second and third rounds have been a win for Lock, as he not only gets to prove if he’s a franchise quarterback or not with all these weapons including KJ Hamler. I love Hamler here, as Lock’s best skills is arm strength, and you get a 4.3 guy with good run after the catchability. Besides, Lock gets added protection with guard/center, Lloyd Cushenberry III.
Minnesota Vikings
With each draft pick they keep getting value, as well they continued to take the value in trades, getting a fourth-rounder (130), a fifth-rounder (169), a sixth-rounder (203), and a seventh-round pick (244), all for their third-round pick (105). Aside from getting more picks, Ezra Cleveland fell to them in round two, and they could have another starting cornerback in Cameron Dantzler. Overall, I like the Vikings draft more and more.
Dynasty Teams with a need at running back
There were nine new running backs added on Day Two, and each may have an opportunity to start at some time this year. These running backs include Clyde Edwards-Helaire (Chiefs), Swift (Lions), Jonathan Taylor (Colts), J.K. Dobbins (Ravens), AJ Dillon (Packers), Cam Akers (Rams), Antonio Gibson (Redskins), Ke’Shawn Vaughn (Buccaneers), Zack Moss (Bills), and Darrynton Evans (Titans).
New York Jets
The Jets were able to acquire a dynamic wide receiver in Denzel Mims and a talented safety in Ashtyn Davis. They were able to get a project in Jabari Zuniga at the edge. Overall, they’ve been great at drafting and trading down to acquire more quality players. Joe Douglas’ first draft has been successful so far.
Losers
Atlanta Falcons
I loved Marlon Davidson throughout the pre-draft process, but I don’t understand what position he’ll play. Davidson has no experience at defensive tackle and will be too big to play edge at 297lbs. I believe they’ve gotten a good player who wouldn’t fit their scheme.
Green Bay Packers
Dillon in the second round doesn’t make any sense, especially when the Packers could have gotten him later in the draft. They still did not provide Aaron Rodgers with another weapon at wide receiver. As well, tight end Josiah Deguara was somewhat of a reach and is more of a blocker than receiver. Overall, they have been disappointing with most of there picks.
Joe Burrow, QB, Bengals
While Burrow gets a long term upgrade at wide receiver with Tee Higgins, there are still three of the five starting offensive linemen positions that are shaky and somewhat terrible. In the third round, the opted to go with linebacker Logan Wilson, which fills a significant need but doesn’t help protect Burrow. This offensive line is a long way from being average and still needs a lot of work.
Philadelphia Eagles
Each team needs an average backup quarterback. As well, it could be argued that Carson Wentz will probably not play every game this year meaning a backup quarterback is important. However, spending a second-round pick on Jalen Hurts is terrible value, when there are other significant needs on the team. There were also other capable backup quarterbacks in players like Jake Fromm who is more pro-ready then Hurts.
