Background
Karim Mane is a 20-year-old, 6’5 combo guard from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He most recently played for the Vanier College Cheetahs (HS), located in Quebec.
Strengths
Immediately noticeable is Karim Mane’s swagger when he steps on the court. You get the sense that he knows he can toy with the defense. Mane is very creative with the ball, whether it’s ball-handling, finishing in traffic, or flashy passing – he has the ball on a string.
Coupled with his creativity with the basketball is his athleticism. He has a quick first step and can blow by defenders with relative ease. Mane loves to attack the basket and fights through contact.
Karim Mane is a streaky shooter but has shown a dedication and work ethic that led to the direct improvement of his outside shot. His first year at Vanier Mane shot just 20% from range, but improved his accuracy and raised his percentage to near-40%.
At 6’5, Karim Mane is a big point guard. He also has a seven-foot wingspan, giving him impressive upside guarding he perimeter.
Mane possesses all the physical tools of an NBA point guard – size, speed, athleticism.
Weaknesses
Exposure is Karim Mane’s biggest disadvantage heading into the 2020 NBA Draft. He suffered an injury causing him to miss key exhibitions that would have netted him scouting opportunities from NBA teams.
The lack of scouting opportunities and not being invited to any sort of G League events keeps Mane in the realm of the unknown.
Karim Mane has been offered a scholarship by DePaul University, and has his eyes set on several other schools if he cannot secure a draft spot. He has not hired an agent in order to maintain his eligibility.
Verdict
Karim Mane is physically gifted, very advanced with the ball in his hands, and has great upside at the next level. However, he is still very raw and has not received enough exposure to secure a draft spot. Combine that with his age (he will be older than many of the other draftees in the 2020 Draft Class), and spending a year in the G League or at the college level will give him more opportunity to get in front of NBA scouts.
Pro Comparison
Karim Mane studies the play of Jrue Holiday often, and that is evident in his playstyle. His jump shot mechanics mirror that of Holiday, and his perimeter defense is an obvious homage.
