Week 10 NFL Injury Report

by Beth Sullivan November 10, 2019

Dr. Beth Sullivan | November 10th, 2019

I thought maybe this would be the week where quarterbacks didn’t dominate this report, but sadly that is not the case. So without further comment let’s take a look at some players with injury issues both good and bad heading into the main slate of week ten games.

Matthew Stafford  QB  Detroit Lions

Stafford’s 136-game consecutive starts streak will come to an end Sunday as he has been declared unfit for duty by medical professionals. Stafford is out for the foreseeable future as he recovers from fractures in his back and a hip contusion which has been characterized as a bone bruise by some. The normal recovery time for the deep bone bruise is two to four weeks and for the back issues, it is three to six weeks. No official word on the nature of the breaks has been released, however, I suspect he is dealing with a compression fracture which is a very painful and nagging issue to recover from. I hate to say this but, depending on how the next few weeks go for the Lions, it could also determine whether we see Stafford again this season or not.

Jacoby Brissett  QB  Indianapolis Colts

Brissett suffered an MCL sprain in week nine and while he practiced on a limited basis all week, and imaging showed no major damage, the Colts are playing it safe and declaring him out for the week ten tilt against the Miami Dolphins. A grade one MCL strain carries a one to three week recovery time normally, so his status will be determined on a weekly basis as he recovers from this knee issue. It is nice to see the Colts take a protective approach to their quarterback’s health since trying to rush him back to the field could lead to further injury.

Patrick Mahomes  QB  Kansas City Chiefs

Mahomes suffered a patellar dislocation in week seven and he is scheduled to start when the Chiefs face off against the Tenessee Titans in week ten. He did not appear on the injury report Friday and is expected to play without any restrictions. That being said, the nature of the original injury has an inherent risk of reinjury. He will be a full go this week and how he fares will determine his outlook for the rest of the season. In other words, I am cautiously optimistic.

Matt Ryan  QB  Atlanta Falcons

Ryan suffered an ankle sprain and sat out last week. He is set to go this Sunday when the Falcons face off against their division rival The New Orleans Saints. Provided he doesn’t re-aggravate the injury, he is right in the one to three-week return window for a simple ankle sprain. Normally, a grade one ankle sprain main issues with a return to the field are pain and swelling control.

We all have to say a prayer that quarterbacks manage to get through week ten without any more injuries. Hopefully, the football gods will look favorably down on us.
