Another Week Another Starting Quarterback Injured

by Beth Sullivan October 18, 2019

Dr. Beth Sullivan | October 18th, 2019

Week seven of the NFL season kicked off Thursday night with the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs mixing it up on the playing field. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, the 2019 starting quarterback curse came to visit starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes was injured in the second quarter of the game when he suffered a dislocated patella.

The patella is the fancy medical term for the knee cap. Video of the on-field examination shows sideline training and medical staff reducing the dislocation while they examined Mahomes on the field.

The normal recovery time for a simple patellar dislocation is four to six weeks. However, while it was reported that there was no fracture identified, injuries to the cartilage or other ligaments won’t be known until after Mahomes undergoes an MRI on Friday.

Mahomes’ knee will be immobilized and swelling will be controlled with ice and elevation. If no further injuries are identified by the MRI, he will begin therapy to strengthen the muscles and ligaments in the knee. If further injury is identified, he could be facing surgery and a much longer recovery period. At this point, we will hope for the best but prepare for the worst. If further ligament or cartilage injury is identified, Mahomes season could be over as the recovery from this type of injury, especially if surgery is needed, is four to six months.
