Ahead of the opening of free agency tonight, the Portland Trail Blazers and Damian Lillard quickly hashed out a four-year super-max extension worth $196 million, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst adds that Lillard will have a $54.3 million player option for the final year of his new deal.
Damian Lillard came to terms within a couple minutes of free agency. Lillard, who had an All-Star year last year, proved that he is an elite scorer He single-handedly beat the Oklahoma City Thunder last year in the playoffs. Lillard also beat a much more skilled team in the Denver Nuggets, a strong team that definitely had more depth than the Blazers. The Blazers overcame this obstacle and moved on to the Western Conference Finals.
During the Western Conference Finals, the Golden State Warriors proved to be too much for Blazers. But Lillard has gotten over several hurdles this year. He was finally not swept in the first round, and that helped proved that he wasn’t a choke artist and deserved a payday.
A much deserved payday that he is finally getting.
