Winners and Losers of the 2019 NFL Combine

Winners and Losers of the 2019 NFL Combine

It’s that time of year again, where one prospect runs a ridiculous 40-yard dash and everyone loses their minds.

It’s time for the draft stock to rise and fall quickly.

This is what sets the tone for these prospects for their future.

Before I dive into this article, I will give you a quick disclaimer: you must take most of these results with a grain of salt.

This is where a player gets overhyped and ends up becoming a bust. That being said, let’s discuss some of the biggest winners and losers of combine weekend.

Top Two Winners

D.K. Metcalf, Ole Miss
The wideout out of Ole Miss sure did help his case to move up on draft boards. He started off his weekend by doing 27 bench press reps, tied for first among wideouts. He furthered his cause by running the third fastest 40-yard dash at 4.33 seconds. While he posted great numbers in those categories, he struggled in lateral movements. He ranked 30th in the 20-yard shuttle, posting a 4.5 second time. He really struggled in the three-cone drill, ranking 27th with a time of 7.38 seconds. Metcalf was being mocked in the late first round but a team will more than likely reach on him based on his workout.

Montez Sweat, Mississippi State
In what is a loaded defensive draft it will take a lot for players to stand out, Sweat took advantage of his combine weekend running the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds. Sweat was ranked inside the Top 10 for most of the workouts and is obviously one of the fastest edge rushers that participated this last weekend. Sweat is also being mocked in the first round right now and is looking like he deserves to be a Top 15 pick if he has a great Pro Day, too. Sweat has some flaws on film, but if he fixes them, he could be a star rusher.

Top Two Losers

Kyler Murray,  Oklahoma
The quarterback out of Oklahoma sure has had a lot of buzz being made around him. The Cardinals are shopping Josh Rosen to take Murray at the No. 1 spot. The Raiders are also looking to take Murray. He is on the loser list for some big reasons: one, being his lack of a workout in general. Murray also had some concerning things come out about him. Chuck Casserly reported that some organizations were not impressed with his leadership skills and study skills. Kyler Murray is starting to look like he will be taken No. 1 overall and be the Cardinals’ next mistake.

Jachai Polite, Florida
The Edge rusher out of Florida had a day that seemed to be one to forget. He did not test very well compared to the other edge rushers. Polite also had some interviews with scouts that did not go that well. Matt Miller from Bleacher Report reported that a scout said that his alleged hamstring issue was “bulls–t.” These are concerning for a player that could be one of the top players at his position. Polite is apart of a loaded class and should start showing it. If he wants to improve his stock, he will need to have a better Pro Day.
