Week 7 was decision time around the NFL. Teams were deciding if they are going to be buyers or sellers ahead of the approaching trade deadline. The players who are reportedly on their current team’s trading block, are making their final case for interested teams to inquire about them. Then make their decision on how much they are willing to offer to acquire them, for their playoff push. Here’s the weekly look back at 10 Takeaways from the week that was Week 7.
No QB, no Two-Headed Monster, No Problem
The Cleveland Browns were short-handed on a short week. Already without running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, the Browns were also without quarterback Baker Mayfield on Thursday night against the Denver Broncos. Third-string back D’Ernest Johnson rushed for 146 yards and scored a touchdown on the ground. Case Keenum stepped in for an injured Mayfield and made his first start in two years. The duo led the Browns to the 17-14 win.
You Know Who Dey Are
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow threw for a career-high 416 yards and three touchdowns. Rookie wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase accounted for 201 of Burrow’s passing yards and scored a touchdown on an 82-yard play. Tight end C.J. Uzomah scored a pair of touchdowns as well to help lead the Bengals to the 41-17 win over the Baltimore Ravens and move them into the top spot in AFC North.
Big Blue
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones quieted his critics just a little bit on Sunday. With his offense decimated by injuries, Jones’ did a little bit of everything. He threw for just over 200 yards and one touchdown. He also made a one-handed 16-yard catch on a trick play. The Giants ruined Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold‘s return to MetLife Stadium with the 25-3 win. Darnold was benched for backup P.J. Walker in the fourth quarter.
Henry 1, Chiefs 0
Although he didn’t rush for 100 yards on the ground or score a rushing touchdown, Derrick Henry did throw a touchdown. The Tennessee Titans running back’s touchdown strike to tight end MyCole Pruitt, when quarterback Ryan Tannehill was wide open, capped off the opening drive. The score gave the Titans the lead, a lead that they never relinquished, in their 27-3 win at home against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Mac 2, Zach 0
New England Patriots rookie signal-caller Mac Jones threw two touchdown passes in his first 300-yard passing game. Running backs Damien Harris and J.J. Taylor each ran for two touchdowns, in the Patriots’ 54-13 thrashing of the New York Jets. Jets quarterback Zach Wilson left the game with a PCL injury and didn’t return, in his second loss in two tries against the Patriots.
What’s a Little Rain
In Sunday night’s game in San Francisco, the typhoon-like conditions created rough sledding for the Indianapolis Colts and 49ers. Missed catches, fumbled snaps, and muffed catches on punts we’re all to blame in the treacherous weather. Carson Wentz and running back Jonathan Taylor led the Colts to the much-needed win. The win keeps them within two games of the division-leading Titans, ahead of their Week 8 head-to-head matchup in Indianapolis.
600 and Counting
In the 38-3 win over the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady hit another uncharted plateau on Sunday. He recorded regular-season touchdown pass No. 600, the first player ever to reach that number. Brady has now thrown at least 20 touchdowns in a season nineteen times. To put that in better perspective, he’s followed on the list by Drew Brees who did it 17 times, Peyton Manning, 16 times, Philip Rivers and Brett Favre who accomplished the feat 15 times. All four are retired.
Bring all the Tricks
The winless Detroit Lions pulled anything they could to get their first win. Head coach Dan Campbell dialed up a pair of fake punts, a surprise onside kick, and a couple of other tricks, in an attempt to pull the upset over the Los Angeles Rams and the Lions’ former quarterback Matthew Stafford. In the end, it was all for not as the Rams won 28-19
Still Undefeated, But….
Despite a slow start, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray found his groove and led his team to the 31-5 win against the lowly Houston Texans. The Cardinals, who are now 7-0, have a short week to prepare for Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The Thursday night matchup will be a huge test for both teams as they make their claim for the top team in the NFC.
Pair of Lackluster Revenge Games
While Matthew Stafford defeating his former team was one of the day’s revenge games. It was the first time DeAndre Hopkins and J.J. Watt had played against their former team the Texans. Watt signed with Arizona during the past offseason while Hopkins was acquired by the Cardinals in a 2020 trade.
