10 Takeaways from Week 5 of the 2021 NFL Season

10 Takeaways from Week 5

Week 5 of the NFL Season has concluded. This week saw two more starting quarterbacks going down with injuries. Seahawks perennial MVP candidate Russell Wilson suffered a finger injury on his throwing hand that will sideline him for at least a month. Giants quarterback Daniel Jones left Sunday’s game against the Cowboys with a concussion. Week 5 also saw the return of NFL football in London, which signals an earlier start to fans’ football Sunday.

Geno’s Kitchen

With Wilson going down with his aforementioned finger injury, former Jets starting quarterback Geno Smith is the Seahawks starter for the next month, best case. In his play in relief in Thursday night’s loss to the Rams, he went 10 for 17 for 131 yards with one touchdown and an interception, which came after the receiver fell down. With the receivers on the Seahawks depth chart, if Smith can limit mistakes he can have success until Wilson returns.

Sunday Morning Football is for the Pitts

The NFL’s return to London saw the breakout game for the Falcons No. 4 overall pick Kyle Pitts. Pitts hadn’t had much of an impact through the first four games of his NFL career. He had nine receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown on Sunday in the Falcons win over the Jets.

Speaking of Rookies

Still trying to get his first win as an NFL head coach, Lions coach Dan Campbell went for two, after his team scored a touchdown in the waning moments and the lead instead of the tie. The attempt was successful, but the Vikings led by Kirk Cousins moved the ball methodically into field goal range, and the kick was good as time expired. Campbell was emotional in his post-game press conference, but even though it didn’t ultimately work out in his team’s favor, you have to commend his decision with the game on the line.

Stick to Football

In the midst of a little scrum with Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette, Dolphins defender Christian Wilkins tried to flop. It didn’t go well. It’s safe to say Wilkins won’t be getting any co-starring roles in any Hollywood blockbusters anytime soon.

Reign Continues

Derrick Henry continued his domination of the Jaguars on Sunday, with 130 yards rushing and three touchdowns. In 11 career games against the Jaguars, the King has compiled 1,143 yards rushing, added another 150 yards receiving, and has scored 15 total touchdowns. Sunday’s performance also helped increase his lead in rushing yards on his quest for a third straight rushing title. He also became just the third running back in Titans/Oilers franchise history to rush for over 60 touchdowns, joining Earl Campbell and Eddie George.

Nobody Wants to Win

Sunday’s Packers-Bengals game was a highly contested game that didn’t lack for some big plays. In the final 2 minutes and overtime, Mason Crosby and Evan McPherson missed five field goals, all of which would have been the potential game-winner. The stalemate went to Crosby and the Packers after he was good from 49 yards out, late in overtime.

Let him Score

Sunday’s Chargers-Browns matchup was a back and forth high-scoring game. With the ball inside the red zone needing just a field goal for the win, Chargers’ running back Austin Ekeler slid down inside the five-yard line to keep the clock running, to leave no time for Baker Mayfield and the Browns offense. On the next play, Ekeler ran up the middle and was trying to go down again. The Browns defense literally carried Ekeler into the endzone. Mayfield was ultimately unsuccessful in leading the Browns on a game-winning drive. Mayfield and Chargers quarterback combined for over 700 yards passing on over 70 combined attempts passing and six touchdowns, four for Herbert.

INT Machine

Cowboys’ second-year cornerback Trevon Diggs tallied another interception, his sixth in five games. in Sunday’s rout of the Giants. Rams Night Train Lane‘s single-season record of the 14 interceptions, which has stood since 1952, could very well be in jeopardy.

Bad Breaks for Big Blue

Giants running back Saquon Barkley was carted to the locker room with an ankle injury on a freak play when he stepped on awkwardly. Quarterback Daniel Jones was wobbly on the field after taking a big hit and was ruled out with a concussion. Wide receiver Kenny Golladay didn’t return after halftime due to a knee injury. First-round pick Kadarius Toney was having a breakout game, recording 10 catches for 189 yards, but was ejected for throwing a punch.

Monkey off Their Back

The Bills were at Arrowhead to face the Chiefs. The last time they played there was last season’s AFC Championship Game in which the Chiefs won decisively. Sunday night Bills used the sour taste that loss left in their mouths and played almost a perfect game on both sides of the ball. Just hope for their sake this wasn’t their ‘Super Bowl’.
