Week 5 of the NFL season is officially in the books. Here’s a weekly look back at the week that was in the NFL.
You Only get 4 Downs
With the chance to drive his team for a game-winning score, Tom Brady somehow lost track of downs. After a fourth-down incompletion, he was seen throwing up four fingers indicating he believed it was fourth down. In true Brady fashion, he poked fun at himself while congratulating LeBron James on winning his fourth championship.
It was far From Pretty
Nick Foles got the better of Tom Brady once again. Although it was far from Foles’ best performance. He missed many open receivers on wide-open attempts.
Bigger than Football
Washington coach Ron Rivera announced early in the week that he was benching Dwayne Haskins and was starting Kyle Allen. After a helmet to the head knocked Allen out of the game, the offense was turned over to Alex Smith. Smith returned after a long battle since suffering a horrific leg injury that almost ended his career and also threatened his life. He took his share of sacks and much to football fans across the board, but none more important than his wife and kids in the crowd, he got back up unharmed. If he doesn’t play another snap he is still the lock for the Comeback Player of the Year.
Meanwhile in Big D
While Smith was the feel-good story of Sunday, Dak Prescott was the heart wrenching one. On a third-quarter scramble, Prescott got rolled on. He fractured and dislocated his ankle. The Cowboys escaped with a victory over the Giants behind a pair of back to back connections from Andy Dalton to Michael Gallup. Prescott had surgery on his ankle Sunday night.
An Extra Night of Football
Not that anything caused by Covid-19 is ever good. But a small silver lining is an added night of NFL football. The Tennessee Titans, after a Covid outbreak forced them and the Steelers to take early season byes, hosted the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday night football.
Champs Aren’t Going to be Handed the Division
One of Week 5’s many surprises took place in Kansas City. The Raiders upset the Chiefs, who have owned the AFC West for the last few years.
D.Q. Makes 2
After the Atlanta Falcons lost to the Carolina Panthers to drop to 0-5, the team fired head coach Dam Quinn as well as their general manager. Quinn becomes the second coach to be fired through Week 5, joining Bill O’Brien in Houston.
Fitz-Magic Goes West
Even bigger than the Raiders’ upset was Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Dolphins’ mishandling of the San Francisco 49ers to the tune of 43-17 (30-7 at the half). An upset that at least one guy predicted, although not in a blowout.
Chase is on the Case
Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Chase Claypool celebrated his fourth career NFL game by scoring four touchdowns in the teams win over the Eagles. Three of those coming through the air and the other was on a jet sweep.
O’fer Squared in the Big Apple.
The pair of teams that call MetLife Stadium home are a combined 0-10 through five weeks. The Giants are in the midst of a rebuild around a new head coach and a second-year quarterback and lost their stud running back for the season. Meanwhile, the Jets seem to be nowhere near being on the same page or showing any consistency, which has led to the overwhelming calls to fire coach Adam Gase, since what seemed like Week 2.
