Week 3 of the NFL season is officially in the books. Here’s a weekly look back at the week that was in the NFL.
Since the week was both crazy and wild, 10 takeaways just wouldn’t do it enough justice. This week, we’re going with 20 takeaways broken up into two parts.

Beard 1, Stache 0
Thursday’s Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars matchup may have put to rest the age-old debate between beard or mustache. Ryan Fitzpatrick and his beard defeated Gardner Minshew and his mustache after a lighthearted back-and-forth between the two leading up to the game.
Speaking of FitzMagic…
Ryan Fitzpatrick has six career wins over the Jaguars. All came with a different team: 2008 with the Bengals, 2012 with the Bills, 2013 with the Titans, 2014 with the Texans, 2015 with the Jets, and 2020 with the Dolphins.
Good Riddance, MetLife
The San Francisco 49ers played back-to-back games at MetLife Stadium against the Jets in Week 2 and Giants in Week 3. Although they won both games, the expense was far from cheap. Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas are lost for the season. Jimmy Garoppolo, Tevin Coleman, and Raheem Mostert will all miss several weeks. On this past Sunday, they lost tight end Jordan Reed, who injured his ankle, and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley to a likely concussion.
Speaking of Injuries…
Week 3 saw the Seahawks’ Jamal Adams (groin), the Bears’ Tarik Cohen (knee), and the Titans’ Taylor Lewan (shoulder) among the many names added to the growing list of NFL injuries.
A Huge Sigh of Relief in Cincy
No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow got hit late and was down on the field in obvious pain. Thankfully for Bengals fans, Burrow returned a play later.
As for No. 2…
Chase Young, the No. 2 overall pick, left Washington’s game against the Cleveland Browns with a groin injury. Unlike Burrow, he did not return.
Trust Broken?
Amidst a sub-par performance against the Atlanta Falcons, Mitchell Trubisky was benched after three quarters as the Bears’ offense was turned over to former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Nick Foles. The Bears trailed the Falcons 26-10 to start the fourth quarter before Foles threw three touchdowns in a comeback victory to move the Bears to 3-0. A quarterback controversy could be brewing in the Windy City.
Bills Almost Pull a Falcons
After leading the Los Angeles Rams by a score of 28-3 early in the second half, the Rams scored 29 unanswered points. However, Josh Allen kept his cool and drove his team for the game-winning score.
Two Hands, D.K.
On a home run pass from Russell Wilson, D.K. Metcalf beat the coverage and had an easy walk-in touchdown, but Metcalf didn’t protect the ball. The ball was punched out and bounced out of the end zone for a touchback, giving possession to the Cowboys.
Wentz and McNabb Have Something in Common
Carson Wentz and the Eagles came away from Sunday’s matchup against the Bengals with a 23-23 tie, preventing both teams from falling to 0-3. In 2008, then-Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb tied the Bengals in a game that finished with a final score of 13-13. Early in Sunday’s game, Wentz broke McNabb’s team record for youngest to record 100 passing touchdowns, doing so in just 59 career games.
